By the Sea

It was peaceful and quiet.

That world of hers.

It was cool and calm.

The water in front of her.

It was warm and loud.

That party behind her.

It was still and unmoving.

All those around her.

Then a sudden movement interrupted everything.

“Sup?”

She turned that head of hers.

Saw him.

“Hey…”

He smiled.

She did too.

They stood by the sea, on the balcony.

It was silent once again.

They found peace…the right party by the sea.

“Friend of Hyesung’s?” he asked momentarily.

Pause.

“Yeah…”

A beat.

“Why aren’t you inside?”

A slow drag of breath.

“Why isn’t the party outside?”

No reply.

“That’s why,” she said, leaning forward on the balcony.

He chuckled.

They traded silent glances.

She played with her martini glass.

He toyed with his cigarette stick.

It was blue. Then fiery red. Pitch black.

The two individuals remained outdoors, by the sea.

“That was nice.”

She blinked. She had forgotten about the beautiful stranger who stepped out earlier in the day to join her.

“Lee Minwoo.”

“Yoo Sooyoung.”

They exchanged handshakes.

She turned to the sea again.

He, the same.

“WHERE HAVE YOU TWO BEEN?!”

A third figure stepped out onto the balcony, disturbing the tranquility.

He was tall. Handsome. He reeked.

“Sup Shoo. Whatcha doing out here?”

In a quiet voice, she replied, “Digging the scene.”

The latter male raised a brow. He turned to Minwoo. “You’re not digging the scene, too?”

His only response was a smoke ring blown into his face.

“We’re picking up Jin. Wanna come?”

It was time.

The shorter male exhaled the last of his cigarette before putting it out. He rubbed his forehead. “Sure.”

“In the car.”

The taller one departed, leaving his two friends alone.

A slight breeze picked up.

She shifted her weight.

He stuffed his hands in his pockets.

“I’ll call you.”

And left.

She felt a smile crept upon her face.

“I’ll call you.”

Downstairs, in the car, Hyesung was smoking to his heart’s content.

He pulled up right in front of his approaching friend.

“That was the best conversation I’ve ever had.”

Hyesung placed his foot on the accelerator. “What’d you guys talk about?”

“Nothing.”

The driver sucked his teeth. “Seriously.”

In a dead pan tone, Minwoo confirmed his response. “I can see why you two are no longer together.”

The taller male made a face.

“What’s her number? Us two belong together.”

And he called her.
